7 is the magic number

RSTO blog - 4th March 2010

During the Morgan Stanley Technology, Media & Telecom Conference, Microsoft announced that Windows 7 had sold more than 90 million copies since its release in July 2009. The announcement was made at the conference by Microsoft's CFO, Peter Klein.

Hot on the heels of the conference, Microsoft issued a nice pat on the back from their Windows 7 blog, also asserting that it was the fastest selling OS in history:

"Windows 7 has sold 90 million licenses to-date! That's a lot of Windows 7. We're humbled and excited that people are responding so positively to Windows 7 - our customers have made it the fastest selling operating system in history."

Humbled or hyperbole aside, the fact is that a majority of PCs are running a version of the Redmond OS, so any major change is important to the business landscape. The W3C statistics show that share currently being around 90% with just over 60% being versions prior to Vista and 7.

Microsoft will be keen to draw a parallel between a more positive response to the OS and increased PC sales. While Gartner reported a significant upturn in PC sales for the last quarter of 2009, they were also quick to assert that Windows 7 was not a sole reason, stating "Windows 7 was launched during the fourth quarter of 2009. Though the new operating system launch did not create additional PC demand, the launch was a good market tool during holiday sales."

One thing is for sure, it will be interesting to see the adoption rate as businesses and the economy emerges from the downturn.
